Career Options

Through Linguistics, students learn about the characteriscs and elements of language. This sets Linguistic students up for a multitude of careers that have an analytic base.

For example, an applied linguistics student is equipped with the knowledge of syntax structure (the elements within a sentence) and the ability to break down foregin languages they have never seen before by analyzing the elements in the foregin language and drawing conclusions based upon their data set. This kind of thinking will allow these students to join fields related to law, such as becoming a lawyer , a forensic linguist , or even a foundation for becoming an investigator such as those in the FBI.

English Linguists and Sociolinguists also have a good handle on the english language and the effects of language in society. These linguists could transition into a journalism field or public relations field easily as they should have a good handle on semantics (the meaning behind words) and pragmatics (the subtleties within phrases or context of words). with the combination of second language acquision research would make teaching English as a Second Language a perfect match as well. These are just a few hand-selected options out of the many options this degree sets linguistic students up for.
